Eri Valley

Woven in Assam.
From our valleys to the world.

THE FIBER OF PEACE

Eri Silk: The sacred peace silk of the Brahmaputra valley.

For centuries across the fertile valleys of Assam, Eri silk (derived from the moth Philosamia ricini) has been woven for royal courts, Buddhist monks, and everyday heirloom family wear. Unlike conventional mulberry silk, which requires boiling living pupae within their cocoons to extract unbroken filaments, Eri is an Ahimsa silk.

The silkworm feeds on the leaves of the castor plant (known locally as Era). When its metamorphosis is complete, the moth pierces an opening and flies out into the valley skies. Only then are the empty cocoons collected, gently cleansed in wood ash water, and spun by hand into dense, breathable yarn.

“Respect the craft. Improve the process. Grow the market. Share the opportunity.”

TACTILE & PHYSICAL ATTRIBUTES

Why Eri is unlike any other silk

Ahimsa / Non-Violent

Moths emerge freely before cocoons are harvested. No living organism is boiled.

All-Climate Thermal

Hollow-fiber microstructure insulates in winter cold while staying remarkably breathable in summer heat.

Matte Cashmere-Silk Feel

Unlike slippery synthetic or mulberry silk, Eri has a textured, matte hand with rich drape.

Heirloom Longevity

One of nature's strongest protein fibers. It softens and gains suppleness with age and washing.

HANDS OF THE VALLEY

Courtyard looms and living traditions.

In the rural villages of Assam, almost every traditional home has a handloom set up in the shaded courtyard. Weaving is not an industrialized chore—it is an inherited art form passed down from mother to daughter, binding families to seasonal rhythms and folklore.

INDIGENOUS KNOWLEDGE

The Hand Spindle (Takli)

Village women spin the degummed Eri fibers using the drop spindle (takli) or hand charkha. Because the moth cuts through the cocoon, the fibers are short staple—yielding irregular slubs and a comforting texture that factory machines cannot replicate.

CULTURAL ICONOGRAPHY

The Mekhela Sador & Stoles

Assam's traditional two-piece drape, the Mekhela Sador, has celebrated Eri for generations. Woven with geometric motifs depicting river eddies, flora, and local fauna, it is a timeless garment of grace, warmth, and resilience.

NEW HORIZONS

Contemporary Integration

Eri Valley was created to take this incredible textile beyond traditional occasions. By developing tailored shirts, lightweight overshirts, relaxed co-ords, and structured home furnishings, we make Assam's peace silk part of contemporary everyday life across the globe.
