THE ART & SCIENCE OF SLOW TEXTILES

From natural fibre
to contemporary form.

Eri Valley’s model connects every stage of textile creation—from ethical castor-fed sericulture and traditional wood-ash degumming to generational handloom weaving and modern garment architecture.

SEVEN SEQUENTIAL CRAFT PHASES

01Raw Cocoon Shells (Firm, Porous)

Sericulture & Castor Rearing

Non-violent emergence in valley plantations

Silkworms (Philosamia ricini) feed on broad, organic leaves of rain-fed castor and kesseru trees. In our Ahimsa methodology, the caterpillar completes its natural metamorphosis unharmed: the moth pierces an opening and flies away before cocoon collection begins.

Wood-Ash Degumming

Alkaline plant cleansing without harsh solvents

Raw cocoons contain natural sericin protein gum. In the ancient Assamese village tradition, empty cocoons are gently boiled in filtered banana stem ash or hardwood ash water. This dissolves the gum naturally without synthetic solvents, yielding soft, breathable fiber clumps.

Takli Hand Spindle Spinning

Hand drafting creating organic slub & character

Because the moth cut through the cocoon upon emerging, Eri cannot be factory reeled into a continuous filament. Artisans spin the soft roving using the traditional drop spindle (takli) or pedal charkha. Hand drafting imparts signature slubs that machine factories cannot replicate.

04Rich Earthy Luster & Hue

Botanical & Low-Impact Dyeing

Valley botanicals and non-toxic mineral palettes

While natural Eri carries a luminous unbleached ivory hue, select yarns are dyed using forest botanicals: lac resin (rose & deep burgundy), madder root (terracotta), wild turmeric (soft gold), and tea bark (earthy taupe), alongside certified low-impact, azo-free mineral mordants.

Traditional Handloom Weaving

Rhythmic interlacing on village pit & frame looms

Master weavers dress traditional throw-shuttle and frame looms with handspun warp yarns. Countless hours are spent tuning reed tensions and hand-inserting geometric extra-weft motifs depicting sacred river eddies, flora, and architectural twill textures.

MATERIAL INTELLIGENCE

How Assam Eri compares to other fibers.

Understanding why architects of slow fashion prefer Assam's peace silk over conventional industrial alternatives:

CharacteristicAssam Eri Silk (Ahimsa)Commercial Mulberry SilkIndustrial Flax Linen
Harvest EthicsAhimsa (Non-violent) — Moth emerges freely before processingBoiled alive inside cocoons to extract single filamentIndustrial retting of flax stalks (often chemical retting)
Surface Hand & SheenTextured, matte luster with cashmere-like tactile warmthGlossy, high shine, slippery smoothCrisp and stiff initially, rougher texture
Thermal BehaviorAll-season hollow fiber: warm in winter, cool in summer heatLightweight and cool, minimal winter insulationCooling and airy, poorly suited for cold climates
Washing & CareHand washable at home; softens and improves over yearsDry-clean only recommended; water stains easilyMachine washable; wrinkles easily
Fiber Tensile StrengthExceptionally resilient natural protein; heirloom durabilityDelicate filament; weakens when exposed to moistureStrong plant fiber, low elasticity
Note on our enterprise model: Eri Valley presents this seven-stage framework as our guiding architectural approach. The company is actively developing an integrated ecosystem where artisan groups, spinners, and weavers collaborate progressively with verified quality checks.
